14
Q

How cyanoacrylate work?

A

Fast acting, best when in contact with moisture to create a very tight instant bond

16
Q

What is polystyrene cement used for?

A

Join rigid polystyrene polymers
Model making assembly ktis

17
Q

How does polystyrene cement work?

A

Softens surface of polymers allowing them to fuse when cement hardens
Not instant so needs to be left to dry

18
Q

Mechanical joining methods

A

Screws
Nuts and bolts
Rivets
Press joining

19
Q

What method of joining enables repair?

A

Nuts and bolts

20
Q

What are four types of heat joining?

A

Oxy-acetylene welding
MIG welding
Brazing (hard soldering)
Soft soldering

21
Q

How does oxy-acetylene welding work?

A

Uses a steel filler rod to create the weld
Does not require electricity
Mig welding commonly used instead

22
Q

What is oxy-acetylene used for?

A

Quick repair jobs in remote locations (as no need for electricity supply needed)
Welds mild steel sheet, tube or plate

23
Q

How does MIG welding work?

A

Uses an electrode wire with an inert cad like CO2 or argon
Suitable for thin gauge metal because heat generated is localised to small area and will not burn through metal or distort surround area

24
Q

What is MIG welding used for?

A

Thin gauge metals, medium carbon steel or aluminium
Climbing frames
Bike frames
Joining tubular steel

25
Q

How does brazing work?

A

Brass filler rod using either oxyacetylene or a gas/ compressed air brazing hearth
Joins dissimilar metals like mod steel sheet to aluminium
Lower temp than MIG welding so suitable for thinner gauge metals but not as strong as a joint

26
Q

What is brazing used for?

A

Lower temp so suitable for joining thinner gauge mild steel tube or bar
Suitable for one off or small batch
Steel framework for small furniture, ornamental light etc

27
Q

What is soft soldering used for?

A

Joins copper or brass for light use applications
Lower temp than brazing joins copper wiring in plumbing, jewellery, brass musical instruments and electrical components
Melting point of filler lower than that of metal being soldered

28
Q

How does soft soldering work?

A

Uses a filler rod to flow between metal surfaces to create the join
