what is a carbon sink
an area that stores carbon from the atmosphere for a long period of time, stores more carbon than it releases, remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
examples of carbon sinks?
ocean, forest
how do oveans act as carbon sinks
carbon dioxide dissolves in the oceans water and is used by aquatic plants in photosynthesis, a portion of carbon compounds found in oceans is buried in the seabed in the form of fossil fuels
how do forests act as carbon sinks
atmospheric carbon dioxide is absorbed by the plants and used in photosynthesis. in forests, large amt of carbon compounds is stored in trees, when trees die, remains are buried deep in the ground, and form coal (fossil fuel)
