13.5 Flashcards
(13 cards)
properties of renewable natural resources
replaced by natural cycles as long as humans do not overuse them
properties of non renewable natural resources
takes millions of years to form naturally, cannot be replaced quickly enough
what is mans negative impact on environment
man is depleting earth’s natural resources
why are forests cleared (5 points)
-urban development to build houses, roads and factories
-grow crops
-farming livestock
-firewood is a source of fuel
-wood is used as construction material and turned into pulp for making paper
undesirable effects of deforestation? (2 points)
extinction and reduction in biodiversity, global warming
how does deforestation lead to extinction and reduction in biodiversity
leads to habitat destruction for many species of animals, remaining forest land is not big enough to support a breeding population of these animals, animals become endangered or extinct, loss of biodiversity
how does deforestation lead to global warming (7 points)
forests are carbon sinks, when trees are cut down, they release into the atmosphere through decomposition and combustion, all the carbon dioxide they have been storing. when trees are left to rot or burn, more emissions of carbon dioxide. decrease in trees results in decreasing rate of photosynthesis by trees in forests, decreasing rate that carbon dioxide is removed from atmosphere, increase concentration of carbon dioxide in atmosphere, lead to global warming
greenhouse effect (3 points)
-enhanced greenhouse effect may result in climate change
-raise in seawater temperatures may result in a loss of biodiversity (coral bleaching)
-rising atmospheric temperatures and extreme weather such as floods
difference between global warming and climate change (2 points)
global warming accelerated by human activities that increase concentrations of greenhouse gases
climate change weather changes etc
what is pollution
process by which harmful substances are added to the environment, making it undesirable or unfit for life, substances are called pollutants
what does untreated sewage contain
phosphates and nitrates
what is bioaccumulation
chemicals that are not excreted, accumulate in bodies of organisms that consume them
