Biology Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is a producer?
A type of organism that makes their own food using organic material found in their environment.
What is photosynthesis?
A chemical reaction where plants convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen using light.
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In the chloplasts.
How does water get into a plant?
Water gets into plants and diffuses into the root hair cells and travels up and water is distributed where needed.
How does gases get into and out of plants?
There are little holes in the leaf where carbon dioxide diffuses and oxygen diffuses out.
Why is a leaf green?
For chlorophyll
Why is a leaf thin?
Allows gases to diffuse
Why is it useful to have a large surface area in a leaf?
To absorb as much light as possible
Why does a leaf have veins?
To transport water.
How do cells transfer energy?
You get energy from the food you have eaten and then glucose react with oxygen to create aerobic respiration. The waste products, carbon dioxide and water are also produced.
Where does respiration happen?
The mitochondria.
How does glucose get into cells?
Glucose gets broken up to smaller molecules and gets absorbed by the small intestine.
What is an ecosystem?
It is where plants or animals are found in a particular location which they live in.
What is a niche?
A particular place or role that an organism has.
What’s a community?
The organisms in an ecosystem.
