Radial Nerve Paralysis
Few treatments. Euthanasia in severe cases. Toe protection on lame side and support shoe on the good side.
Broken Bones
Veterinary surgical treatment. Rest shoe (Patten Bar) may help. Stall rest. Euthanasia in bad cases.
Bucked Shins
Reduced workload until inflammation disappears. Back off on toe grabs & traction.
Bowed Tendons
Determine which tendon is involved. Safe practice: trim to natural angle, shoe with rocker toe egg bar. Wrap both legs for support.
Osselets
Severe rocker or square toe may give some relief. Early veterinary treatment may prolong usefulness.
Carpitis
Trim, level & balance and protect from uneven wear if necesarry.
Curb
Rest & ice. Raise heels. Patten bar as a rest shoe in severe cases. Anti-inflammatory treatment.
Capped Hocks & Elbows
Ice treatment. Drain swelling. The cause of the injury must be addressed. Better bedding, change shoeing of front feet.
Ringbone
Rocker toes, half round, omni-directional break-over shoes. Chemical fusion for high articular.
Windpuffs
No farrier treatment. Cold water, liniment and reduced work may bring improvement. Likely to reoccur with work. Or ignore.
Thoroughpin
No farrier treatment. Cold water, liniment and reduced work may bring improvement. Likely to reoccur with work. Or ignore.
Stifle Lameness
Little can be done. Trim, level & balance to protect from uneven wear.
Sprained Suspensory Ligament
Stall rest. Wrap legs. Lower heels. Possibly use a Patten Bar to encourage rest in early stages. Veterinary involvement.
Stifled
Working horse on hills to strengthen quadriceps & biceps femorus may be beneficial. Backing up may disengage the medial patella.
Splints
Surgical repair if 2nd metacarpal is broken, otherwise balanced shoeing. Rest if lame.
