Carpitis
Once bone growth starts, it can’t be stopped. If it becomes articular the usefulness of the horse is over.
Curb
Full recovery with permanent blemish below the point of hock.
Ringbone
Non-articular is more of a blemish, but could progress into joint to become articular.
Capped Hocks & Elbows
Good outcome with good management. Possible permanent blemish the only negative.
Broken Bones
Saucer fracture: Good. Complete fracture, euthanasia often most humane outcome.
Radial Nerve Paralysis
If no significant improvement by 3 weeks, euthanasia likely to be the most humane option.
Bowed Tendons
The injury site remains thicker with scar tissue & is weakened. May return to soundness. Prone to recurring injury.
Osselets
Not good. A career ending affliction.
Bucked Shins
Good outcome with judicious training regimen.
Bone Spavin
Determined on case by case basis. Possibly career ending, but can be managed if caught early and hock stress minimised.
Stifled
Many return to work once muscle tone has improved, with possible surgical intervention.
Stringhalt
Dependent on the severity of the uncontrolled motion. Sometimes unusable.
Thoroughpin
Unlikely to cause lameness at any point.
Sprained Suspensory Ligament
Dependent on aftercare, conformation, enough rest and severity of sprain.
Windpuffs
Unlikely to cause lameness at any point.
