W3: Classical Conditioning Flashcards
Classical conditioning
- Animals come to respond to a previously neutral stimulus that has been paired with another stimulus (the CS) that elicits a reflexive, automatic response
- After repeated pairing with the UCS, which elicits an automatic, reflexive response (UCR) from the organism the CS comes to elicit a conditioned response (CR)
Unconditioned stimulus (UCS)
stimulus that elicits an automatic response
Unconditioned response (UCR)
automated response to non-neutral stimulus that does not need to be learned
Conditioned Response (CR)
response previously associated with a non-neutral stimulus that is elicited by a neutral stimulus through conditioning
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)
Initially neutral stimulus
Major principle of classical conditioning
Acquisition
Extinction
Spontaneous recovery
Renewal effect
Stimulus generalisation
Stimulus discrimination
Classical conditioning in daily life
Advertising - pairing products with celebrities to form connections
Higher - order conditioning
When organisms develop classically conditioned responses to CSs associated with the original CS
e.g. conditioned do to salivate (CR) to a tone (CS), pair the tone with a circle, dog will eventually salivate to both circle and tone
