  • high in external validity
  • access data of a sensitive nature
  • flexible as qualitative and quantitative data depending on aims
  • study people indirectly - analysed outside of context
  • researcher may attribute opinions and motivations
  • may suffer from lack of objectivity eg if more descriptive forms of thematic analysis are employed
