Transition Metals (13a) Flashcards
Where are transition metals in the periodic table?
In the centre, between groups 2 and 3
What are common uses of transition metals?
Used for jewellery, construction, vehicles, electrical wiring etc.
3 physical properties of transition metals
Malleable (can be hammered or wired into shape), ductile (can be stretched out to make wires) and are good conductors of electricity
What is iron used to make?
Buildings, bridges, ships and cars because it’s malleable and strong
What is copper used to make?
Electrical wires as it’s ductile and a good conductor of electricity
What’s the difference between transition metal compounds and group 1 & 2 metal compounds?
Transition compounds are coloured whereas group 1 and 2 compounds are colourless or white
Covalent bonds
When a pair of electrons is shared between atoms of two non-metal elements
Ionic bond
A bond formed between a metal and a non-metal
Chemical bond
A force that holds atoms together within a molecule or compound
