Haplotypes Flashcards

Q

What is the relationship between SNPs and Haplotypes?

A

-Single Nucleotide Polymorphism: Substitution mutation at a single site.
- Haplotype: A group of closely-linked genes that tend to be inherited as a block.
-some SNPs are co-inherited as blocks

Q

How does recombination affect the relationship between SNPs and Haplotypes?

A

-Mutations in different DNA molecules of diploid chromosomes become separated within a single generation by independent assortment.
-Mutations on the same chromosome become separated more slowly by recombination.
-Haploid sequences, e.g., human Y-chromosome and mtDNA, are not subjected to recombination, mutation in these sequences tends to stay together.
-Recombination is affected by distance and variation in the genome, i.e., hot and cold spots. Discrete combinations of the SNPS in recombination-poor regions define a haplotype.
