Q

What is data transmission

A

Data transmission is an important part of computer use. It involves the sending of digital messages/ data between devices in a network such as a LAN or over the internet. Below is a list of issues associated with data transmission.

Q

User Authentication

A

Usernames and passwords authenticate users who may be trying to access a network and therefore send data. This prevents hackers from accessing unauthorised data.

Firewalls

A

Monitor traffic in order to prevent unauthorised access or dangerous data packets to be transmitted or causing harm to a network/ device.

Q

Encryption

A

Information that may be hacked or intercepted while in transmission still may not be accessed due to it being encrypted which means it cannot be read.

Q

Bandwidth and Latency

A

Bandwidth is the rate of data transfer over a network normally measured in MB/s or GB/s. The higher the bandwidth the faster data can transmit in and out of a network.

Latency is the time delay for a data packet to transfer to its destination usually measured in milliseconds.

Compression

A

Compression reduces the file size to be transferred so that it can be sent quickly.

Q

Codec

A

A codec is a program used to compress and decompress video and audio files. This reduces the space that data takes up on your computer and allows faster transfer speeds over the internet. Sometimes this transfer can lead to a loss in quality like in the resolution of a video call.
