What is food security?
considers availability, access and utilisation of food
Why may people have poor food security?
do not have enough money
no effective trade policies/ transport systems
population increase - housing
less available land for farming
What is malnourishment?
an unbalanced diet when health suffers
What is Fairtrade?
guarantees that producers get a fair deal
What does Fairtrade do?
- farmers and communities have a more secure income, less likely to live in poverty
- its helping communities to establish cooperatives
-improving the farmers access to training
What happens when you buy fairtrade products?
- producers get paid a fair price
- supporting health and education programmes in involving countries
- workers have improved working conditions
- flavour and taste comparable to other products
What are the advantages of GM crops?
- improved quality and quantity
- can grow in adverse conditions
- herbicide and insect resistance, thrive better
- higher nutritional value
- cheaper to produce
Why may people not want to buy GM foods?
- long term safety is unknown
- environmental concerns
- lack of communication between provider and consumer
How much food and waste does the UK throw away per year?
7 million tonnes, worth £120.5 million
What happens to food waste?
Rots and produces harmful GHGs -> global warming and climate change
Why do we throw away food?
- too much food is prepared
- we do not use food in time
What foods are wasted the most?

What is a carbon footprint?
amount of carbon emissions produced in the growing, processing, production and disposal of food
What is carbon offsetting?
planting trees to absorb carbon
What is an eco-footprint?
measure of our actions on the environment
