Biology Flashcards
Cell Membrane
Controls the movement of substances in and out of a cell
Nucleus
Contains DNA
Mitochondria
Where energy is released through respiration
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance, where chemical reactions happen
Permanent Vacuole
Contains cell sap
Chloroplasts
Contain chlorophyll to absorb light energy for photosynthesis
Cell Wall
Made of cellulose, which strengthens the cell.
Are animal cells and plant cells prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Eukaryotic.
Are Bacteria Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?
Prokaryotic.
What characteristics do Bacteria have?
- single-celled
- no nucleus - have a single loop of DNA
- have small rings of DNA called plasmids
- smaller than eukaryotic cells
Whats the function of a sperm cell?
fertilise an ovum (egg).
Whats the function of a red blood cell?
to transport oxygen around the body.
Whats the function of a muscle cell?
contract and relax to allow movement.
Whats the function of a nerve cell?
carry electrical impulses around the body.
