Q

List 6 characteristics of type IIa muscle fibres.

A
  1. Fast contraction speed - used for speed endurance-based activities.
  2. Moderate force of contraction.
  3. Generate greater force and more powerful contractions as they are larger than red fibres.
  4. Possess some aerobic characteristics such as moderate levels of myoglobin, mitochondria and blood capillaries.
  5. Fatigue resistant but not as much as slow twitch fibres.
  6. Stimulated by large motor neurons and are stimulated at a moderate frequency.

Q

List 6 characteristics of type IIb muscle fibres.

A
  1. Rapid contraction speed - used for speed, strength and power-based activities.
  2. High force of contraction.
  3. Fatigue very quickly - no oxygen.
  4. Generate greater force and more powerful contracting as they are larger than red fibres.
  5. Possess very few aerobic characteristics such as low levels of myoglobin, mitochondria and blood capillaries, but very high anaerobic characteristics such as high levels of glycogen.
  6. Stimulated by very large motor neurons and are stimulated at a very high frequency.

Q

List 6 characteristics of type I muscle fibres.

A
  1. slow contraction speed - used for endurance activities.
  2. Low force of contraction.
  3. Fatigue resistant.
  4. Contract repeatedly for continuous activity.
  5. Posses more aerobic characteristics such as high myoglobin, mitochondria and blood capillaries.
  6. Stimulated by small motor neurons and are stimulated at a low frequency.
