What is a nutrient reference value?

A

Set of tables or numbers to see how much of a nutrient we require for a healthy life

Are NRV’s set for short term or long term health?

A

Depends on the nutrient, some are for long term health and some are for short term - macronutrient range is related to long term and chronic disease (reduces risk of chronic disease over a lifetime)

Who decides what the NRVs are and how is this done?

A

Expert panel - scientific experts look through data from animals, humans, observational studies and then evaluate and come up with the NRV

A

The NRV’s can change when new information comes to light and numbers are reevaluated, panel make up might change (different people)

Why is the NRV for macronutrients given as a range rather than a single number?

A

The NRV are given as a range as people eat differently around the world and evidence shows people can tolerate a wide range of macronutrients and still maintain good health

What is the difference between an RDI and AI?

A

The difference between an RDI and AI is that RDI is set to meet the needs of 97-98% of the healthy population whereas the AI is based on observing healthy people and seeing how much of a nutrient they’re consuming - less precise

Can a nutrient have both an RDI and an AI?

A

Yes, each nutrient that has an RDI also has an AI however the AI tends to be a much higher approximation and more of a guess that is established when the RDI and EAR is unknown

A

The highest average daily nutrient intake level likely to pose no adverse health effects to almost all individuals in the general population. As intake increases above UL, potential risk of adverse effects increases
