Unit 1 (Video 1) ASRs Flashcards

1
Q

A behavioral assessment begins at what point in the ABA service delivery model?

A

Before development of the plan - behavioral assessment methods gather information to make decisions. A behavior analyst must systematically gather information before they design any type of intervention plan, not after. While data collection will take place after implementation, the behavioral assessment process must begin long before implementation.

Q

what is the purpose of behavioral assessments?

A

Identify the behavioral problem and how to alter it for the better. - Behavioral assessment is conducted to identify exactly what behavior and environment interaction is problematic and to inform decisions in developing a plan if appropriate. These assessments will not be used for diagnosing, identifying medical conditions, or psychological issues.

Q

what are characteristics of behavioral assessments?

A

ongoing and continuous, focus on observable and measurable events, perspective that bx is situation-specific. - Behavioral assessment is always ongoing and should occur at every stage of the service delivery process, not just pre- and post-treatment. The goal is to target the behavior itself as a product of the environment rather than as a symptom of an underlying trait, process, or disorder. The behavioral assessment focuses on behavior and environmental events that can be seen or observed and subsequently measured. It takes on the perspective that behavior is situation-specific or “extrinsically variable,” meaning that behavior is mediated by the environment.

Q

At which point within the ABA service delivery model should a behavior analyst conduct an assessment and identify target behavior(s)?

A

at the beginning of service delivery. - According to the ABA service delivery model flowchart, service should start with assessment. This allows the analyst to make data-based decisions to inform goal selection when starting treatment. This should occur before developing the treatment plan, implementing the treatment plan, or training, as the assessments should inform all those things.

Q

in certain cases, assessment is required by law in the US.

A

True. - In the United States, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) outlines conditions for which behavioral assessment is a legal requirement. Laws vary from state to state regarding the standards of assessment, but IDEA is a federal act that covers the entirety of the U.S.

Q

How can a proper behavioral assessment address critiques of behavioral interventions?

A

identifies unwanted procedures before they are used, involves consumer in goal selection, ensures client is informed before they give consent. - Behavioral assessments can identify if the consumer is comfortable with the goals and procedures as well as helping to ensure the consumer is given proper information before the plans are put in place. However, even with all these precautions, accurate implementation is not guaranteed.
