Biopsychology, Sensation, And Perception Flashcards
What is the main body system that involves the brain?
Nervous system
What is the nervous system made up of?
Neurons
What do neurons do?
Transport information to and from the brain to the rest of your body
The ability for the brain and nerve cells to adapt and change when there is injury
Neuroplasticity
Produced energy cells and fuels activity in the neuron
Cell body
Branch out from cell body known for passing through the cell body to transport the message to the cell body itself
Dendrites
Transmits messages away from the cell body and out of the cell
Axon
A fatty substance that protects the axon and helps speed up the signals (hint protect: shield)
Myelin sheath
Smaller than fibers that branch out from the axon (in the name)
Axon terminals
What must a message pass through to transport from one neuron to another
Synapse
Neurons that carry info from the senses to the central nervous system (in the name)
Sensory neurons
Neurons that carries info from the central nervous system to the rest of the body to tell it what to do
Motor neurons
Chemical messengers that are released by the nervous system that help aid the process of transmission (adrenaline, dopamine, endorphins, etc)
Neurotransmitters
Nervous systems 2 main components
Central nervous system
Peripheral nervous system
Composed of the spinal cord and the brain
