With regards to steering gear, every ship shall be provided with?
A main steering gear, and an auxillery steering gear.
So arranged that the failure of one will not impact the other
How much pressure should the steering gear be able to withstand?
1.25 times the maximum working pressure to be expected in operational conditions
Capable of steering the ship at maximum service speed (good plan)
How fast should the steering gear be able to move the rudder?
capable of putting the rudder from 35º one side to 35º the other side at maximum service speed and deepest seagoing draught
AND in the same conditions, going from 35º one side to 30º the other within 28 Seconds

How long should it take to go to hand steering? How?
30 secs
On aquila, turn switch to follow up - use wheel
or non Follow up, use joystick
When must you be capable of switching to hand steering, who must be present?
Restricted visability
High traffic density
Manouevering/docking/anchoring
A qualified person must be present to take the wheel, the OOW
What are the autopilot features, what do they do?
The overall effect is to change the amount of yaw that is tolerated
Rudder Limit - Sets how far the autopilot can move the rudder
Rudder - Sets how many degrees of rudder angle, per degree of heading error
Counter Rudder - Sets how many degrees of opposite helm to be applied (i guess as the ship nears the correct heading)
Weather/Yaw control - Sets a time delay, to allow the ship to naturally recover its heading in rough weather
Hazards of Autopilot?
Over-reliance, complacency
loss of situational awareness
Must be familiar of the change over procedure to hand steering
The controls must be clearly labeled
How often should autopilot/hand steering be tested?
Autopilot should be tested at least once per watch, all function tests conducted
Test manual steering once per day and before entering restricted waters
Difference between follow up and non follow up
Follow up - Wheel - Rudder Follows wheels movements, wheel over, rudder over.
Wheel midships, rudder midships
Non Follow up - Joystick - Applies a rudder angle, when joystick is released, it pops back to middle, but rudder stays over until joystick is used to correct it
Checks of the steering gear every watch/after prolonged use of autopilot?
Rudder responds to manual steering from all bridge positions, using each pump singly and together
