Where is it found in a construct chain?
it is the “regular” form
as seen in the vocab lists
it is found at the final end of a construct chain
What is meant by the construct state of a noun?
Where is it found in a construct chain?
It is the form of a noun when it is in construction with another noun
it is found before the absolute noun
True or False?
A noun in the construct state has the definite article.
FALSE! The construct noun never has the definite article in Hebrew.
But, in English trans, it is given the article if absolute is definite.
True or False?
Personal names are definite.
True
(so the construct noun in translation would be definite)
Can a construct noun be definite if the absolute is not?
No!
What is used instead of a construct chain to make the 1st noun definite but the 2nd noun indefinite?
translated as “belonging to” or “of”
What are some of the relationships that could be expressed in a construct chain, besides just “of”?
belonging to
made out of
has for
What is the construct relationship most often used to express?
possession
(although it can also be adjectival)
Why do the vowels sometimes change in the construct noun?
Because the nouns in construct are treated as one word, with the accent on the final noun only, changing the position of the syllables in the construct noun in relation to the accented syllable.
What will often reduce to a short vowel in a final closed syllable of a construct noun?
A medium vowel, since now the final closed syllable is an unaccented syllable.
If a medium vowel is in the first of two syllables and that first syllable is open, what happens to the vowel?
The medium vowel reduces to sheva.
That happens to the diphthong (such as patakh-yod) in an accented syllable when it is put in construct and no longer has the accent?
The diphthong patakh-yod changes to the
vowel tsere-yod.
What do feminine nouns ending in qamets-he often change their ending to in the construct form?
patakh-tav
