Observation
Description of something you see, smell, touch, taste, and hear, your 5 senses
Inference
A guess about an object or outcome based on your observations
Qualitative
Descriptive words/adjectives

Using numbers to measure something
Precision
“Are the measurements close together?”
- Think: Is the data consistent?
Accuracy
“Are measurements close to a set/accepted value?”
- Think: Is the data correct?
Hypothesis
A testable prediction based on observations that describes a cause and effect relationship between variables
- An if then statement
Independent variable
What the experimenter will deliberately change or manipulate in the investigation
- “What am I as the experimenter changing?”
Dependent variable
what changes in response to the independent variable
- “What DATA am I collecting”
Constants
Aspects on an experiment that are held consistent (ensures ALL aspects of trials are identical, EXCEPT for the IV)
Experimental group
every other group that’s being tested/studied
Control group
the group used as a basis for comparison (the “normal” group - group that does not have a IV)
Atom
The smallest unit of an element
