1.4 Management of the River Kennet [HIC] Flashcards
(8 cards)
Hard Management
Gabions - Cheap reinforcement for river banks to reduce erosion
Sluices - Can directly control water flow to optimise river channels
Drainage Caps - Block water from flooding sewage system
Soft Management
Afforestation - planting trees in areas where the river is prone to overflowing
Allowing floodplains to flood
Risk Areas
Lower part of town, Cooper’s Meadow area. Waitrose.
Local Groups
Locals have interests in keeping the ecological and economic value of having the Kennet properly managed.
Eg. ARK (Action River Kennet) - Less funding but still important.
Funding
£300,000 funded by local council
£50,000 from local fundraisers
Successful or Not
Largely successful in terms of cost.
Reduced damage by a large scale
Physical Causes of Flooding
Weather - High Rainfall
Rock - Impermeable rocks limits percolation and infiltration, encourages surface run-off
Soil - Low infiltration rates in certain types Eg. clays
Drainage Density
Vegetation
Human Causes of Flooding
Deforestation - Reduces interception
Urbanisation - Increases impermeability
Agriculture - Farming practices Eg. Plowing, Overgrazing, under-utilisation.
