1.4 pharm Flashcards
(18 cards)
Frequency distribution curve
a graphical representation of the number of patients responding to a drug action at different doses
Median effective dose
the dose required to produce a specific therapeutic response in 50% of a group of patients
median lethal dose
the dose of a drug that will be lethal in 50% of a group of animals
Therapeutic index
a measure of a drug’s safety margin: the higher the value the safer the dose
Median toxicity dose
The dose that will give a given toxicity in 50% of a group of patients
graded dose response
by observing & measuring the patient’s response at different doses of the drug one can explain several important clinical relationships
potency
A drug that has more of this will produce therapeutic effects at a lower dose, compared with other drugs in the same class
efficacy
The magnitude of a maximal response that can be produced from a particular drug.
A drug is considered to have more efficacy when it produces a higher maximal response
Receptor
A cellular macromolecular to which a medication binds in order to initiate its effect
agonist
A drug that produces the same type of response as the endogenous substance
Antagonistic
a drug that occupies a receptor & prevents the endogenous chemical from acting
pharmacogenetics
an area of pharmacology that examines the role of genetics in pharm response
pharmacokinetics
what the body dose to the drug
pharmacodynamics
what the drug does to the body
grapefruit juice
inhibits intestinal isoenzyme - decreases metabolism of many drugs & increases their availability for absorption
Tyramine
aged cheese, yeast extract, chianti wine then if combined with MOA inhibitors then BP to rise to life threatening level
theophylline
with caffeine can result in excessive CNS excitments
potassium-sparing diuretics *spiralatone with salt substitute
dangerously high potassium
