1.4 - system approach when designing Flashcards
What is an output?
sends out information, heat, light, sound or mechanical movement to the environment the system is operating in
What is a process?
How the product does it?
What is an input?
electrical and mechanical sensors that use signals from the environment and convert them into signals that can be passed into processing devices and components
What does a system diagram consist of?
input, process and output
What is a system diagram?
a diagram that breaks down an operation into three main parts
What does LDR stand for?
Light dependent resistor
What is an LDR?
a component in which the resistance to the flow of an electrical current through it changes as the light intensity that falls upon it alters.
- input device
What can LDRs be found in?
street lamps, clock radios, nightlights.
What is a thermistor?
a component in which the resistance to the flow of an electrical current through it changes with temperature.
What are the two types of thermistor?
Positive temperature coefficient - increases with temp increase
Negative temperature coefficient - decreases with temp increase
What are thermistors found in?
toasters, coffee makers, refrigerators, freezers
What are switches used for?
- turning something on
- object has reached as far as you want it to travel
- want to start something by pressing it with finger
- you want to know if something has closed
- you want to stop a machine if a guard is opened
Describe a rocket switch?
flick either side
What is a push to make switch?
push down on it
What is a pressure pad switch?
apply pressure
