1.4 Wired and Wireless Networks Flashcards
(20 cards)
Give two advantages of using a client-server network over a peer-peer network
- Central Control over security
2. Easier maintenance and upgrades
Give two disadvantages of using a client-server network over a peer-peer network
- Failure of the server will render all of the client computers useless
- Can cost more
What is meant by hardware?
The physical parts of a computer system
What physical hardware is required for a computer to connect to the internet
Network interface card
What is the purpose of the router
Routers are located at places where different networks meet and forward data along the best route through the network
What is a switch?
Switches are hardware devices in a network that connect two devices with efficient high speed transition
What hardware does the network need in order to connect to it wirelessly
A wireless access point
Three ways of transmitting data across a network, for each give an advantage and disadvantage
1.Ethernet Cable Adv - Cheap and easy Dis - Bulky and hard to use in large areas 2.Fibreoptic cable Adv - Faster and more reliable Dis - Much more expensive 3.Wireless Adv -Easy and flexible Dis - Poses security and speed risks
What is the internet
The internet is a worldwide collection of computer networks
What two items of hardware are needed to connect to the internet?
- Modem
2. Router
What is the function of a router and modem
- Convert between digital and analogue signals
2. Routers manage the transition of data packets to the appropriate locations
What’s the difference between WWW and Internet
The internet is the underlying network infrastructure of all of the web pages that are on the WWW
What’s the role of a DNS server and how does it relate to IP addresses
The DNS matches up IP addresses to website addresses. This allows users to access webpages.
What type of network is used to deliver web pages to users
Client-Server
What is cloud storage and why is it useful?
Storage that is kept on a server, useful as you can access it on multiple devices
Why would someone not want to use cloud storage
It relies on the data storage company to keep your data secure
Describe the concept of a virtual network
A network of computers tat are connected together on a larger network of computers
One reason why a company with employees all around the world would want a virtual network
They can access the files of the “office” from anywhere in the world
Why would a company that deals with private information may want to use a virtual network
Only trusted people with access to the network can see the data on the network
Why would a school want to use a virtual private network
To separate teachers and students workplaces, and so they can access from home
