A

a pair of words with differnt mwanings which differ in only one sound –> minimal pairs can be used to prove that a sound is a phoneme

allophones

A

usually, there is more than one phone which realises a given phoneme, the systematic realisation of a phoneme is called allophones
like a z can be z and s

they can tell you something about the speaker’s backround
