2
Q

What is a Slip band. what will happen if subjected to multiple slip bands

A

When a group of atoms slide past one another on slip lines in the crystal structure.
multiple slip bands cause plastic deformation/ cause plastic deformation

10
Q

why is mid carbon steel hard to weld

A

Due to the hydrogen content causing cracks in the weld. use low hydrogen fillers

11
Q

Why is high carbon steel hard to weld

A

Also due to large maounts of cracks appearing. use pre heating procces

13
Q

What is Distillation

A

A purification process where metals are heated just above their boiling point to turn the pure part into vapors and leave the impurities behind. the metals are then condensed and leave the impurities behind.

14
Q

Electrolytic Refining.

A

Define a technique used for the purification of metals with the process of Electrolysis. A purification process where two metal rods or electrodes are placed into a bath of an electrolyte and purified using Electrolysis. Two rays/rods one cathode one anode. both submerged in a bath containing impure salts. the cations gains electrons while the anion loses eclectrons. anode oxidation cathode reduction

15
Q

Zone Refining

A

A process where a crystal is purified by heating and moving through a rod. The heated part or “molten zone” moves through a long rod. the impurities move through the rod, while the pure metal remains at the start of the rod.

17
Q

High carbon steel c content

A

0.35 %- 0.50%

18
Q

Taconite

A

a form of low-grade iron ore. formed into pellets to be used in smelting.

19
Q

Direct reduced iron

A

iron formed by the reduction( losing oxygen) by methane gas in an Electrical Arc Furnace. breaks down the reduction process.

20
Q

Liquation

A

Where metals are heated up on top of a furnace separating the impurities and pure metals. the pure metal slides down a slope and then the pure metal is poured into a mold.

21
Q

Distalllation

A

The process where metals are heated just above their boiling points and turned into metal vapor for purification.
