Q

Strength of DSM-5 and ICD-10

A
  • One strength is that Brown et al did research on the DSM 4
  • It found that the DSM 4 has excellent reliability scores for numerous mental health disorders
  • The inter rater reliability for specific phobias are 0.7 and for OCD it was 0.75
  • It is seen that any score over 0.7 is considered good
  • Therefore this suggest that the DSM is a reliable diagnostic tool that can consistently identity mental health

Q

Weakness of DSM-5 and ICD-10

A
  • One weakness is there are difference between the two manuals which questions the reliability of the diagnosis they provide
  • Hoffman et al found that when they use the DSM-5 and ICD-10 in a study of alcoholism over 7000 prisoners
  • 1/3 of those were mild alcohol disorder according to the DSM-5 but received no diagnosis using the ICD-10
  • This suggest that if professionals used different manuals, it can lead to differences in diagnosis which can lead to different treatment
