what are 3 of the things in which Raymond Williams said the way of life of a group needed to include to create a culture?
-dominant values of society (same culture celebrating the same events)
-religious beliefs (following and worshiping certain leaders on certain days)
-highest intellectual and artistic achievements of a group (OBE’s, brits, baftas)
Giddens view of culture
no culture could exist without societies but also no societies could exist without culture. Culture dictates how those institutions work by setting norms and by shaping expectations about the social roles people should play in those institutions
dominant culture
the main culture within society which is shared by the majority of the popoulation.
-many believe this type of culture is determained by the most powerful in society (eg white males)
high culture
the rich/upper class culture which have something that is considered superior (eg private education and owning land)
folk culture
the culture of people.
-It is rooted in the experiences and everyday lives of communities which is actively created by normal people not simply consumed by them.
mass culture
less worthy form of folk culture.
-a product of mass media and audience are only consumers of the culture which just follow what others do to fit into what is popular.
pop culture
what is appreciated by a large number of people
postmodernist view of high culture
growth of mass communication technology has meant that a range of cultural products from popular culture are now available to mass audience
subculture
a culture within a culture.
-smaller groups made up of people with shared norms and values ehich exist within larger societies. (eg skinheads, they detach themselves from society norms and see their skin as a blank canvas to fill with tatoos)
global culture
the way in which cultures in different countries of the world have become more alike sharing increasingly similar products and ways of like.
