Management for allergic conjunctivitis

A

(1) Removal of foreign bodies
(2) conservative:
- Cold compress
- Artificial tears
(3) Oral antihistamines (loratadine)
(4) Eye drops:
1st line: topical/systemic antihistamine (antazoline)
2nd line: mast cell stabiliser (topical cromoglycate; inhibit degranulation)

  • Mast cell stabilizers: cromoglycate, lodoxamide
  • Steroids: dexamethasone (beware of inducing glaucoma)
  • NSAIDs: diclofenac

Allergic: SMALL papillae on tarsal conjunctivae
Giant papillary: GIANT papillae on tarsal conjunctivae

A
