To make the file size smaller

What are 3 benefits of compressing a file?
A
Files take up less storage space, can be transferred quickly, can be read from of written to quicker.

What is lossy compression?
A
Where some of the data is lost and not recoverable. Greatly reduces file size and quality. Suitable for images, sound and video but not for text.

What is lossless compression?
A
None of the data is lost, encoded differently, can be turned back into original format. Can be used on all types of data. Less effective at compression than lossy. Most suitable for documents.
