Special Senses Flashcards
A transparent, flexible structure in the eye that focuses light onto the retina.
Lens
The innermost layer of the eye containing photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) that convert light into nerve signals.
Retina
The clear, protective front surface of the eye that helps refract light.
Cornea
The black center of the eye that regulates the amount of light entering the eye.
Pupil
The tough, white outer layer of the eye that provides structural support.
Sclera
The colored part of the eye that controls the size of the pupil and the amount of light entering.
Iris
Movable folds of skin that protect and cover the eyes.
Eyelids
Includes the ear canal and the visible part of the ear (pinna) that collects sound waves.
External ear
Contains the eardrum and the three tiny bones (ossicles) that transmit sound vibrations.
Middle ear
Includes the cochlea, semicircular canals, and vestibule, which are responsible for hearing and balance.
Inner ear
A spiral-shaped, fluid-filled structure in the inner ear that transforms sound vibrations into electrical signals.
Cochlea
The openings in the nose through which air enters.
Nostrils
The dividing structure between the two nostrils.
Septum
A hollow space within the nose that filters, warms, and humidifies inhaled air.
Nasal cavity
Responsible for the sense of smell, detecting odor molecules in the nasal cavity.
Olfactory nerves
