What is impetigo?

A

A superficial bacterial skin infection caused by Staph aureus/Strep pyogenes

How is impetigo spread?

A
  • Direct contact with discharges from the scabs of an infected person
  • Spread via hands, toys, clothes and environment
  • Incubation period is 4-10 days

How does impetigo present?

A
  • Golden, crusted skin lesions typically found around the mouth

How is impetigo managed?

A
  • Hydrogen peroxide 1% cream
  • Fusidic acid cream
  • Oral Flucloxacillin can be given if extensive disease
  • School exclusion until lesions have crusted over/48 hours after starting treatment
