Asymmetry
When an element isn’t centred

a compositional trick used to draw attention to an area within the composition
Enlarging
making something larger and more extensive
Scale and weight
when scaled up elements are used to give a sense of depth and distance within the composition
Balance
When objects have a triangular weight base which gives the composition stability, or when there are similar shapes within a composition creating symmetry
Pattern
repeated decorative design
Foregrounds and backgrounds
create depth and distance in the composition
Contrast
relates to the use of opposites in a design, colours, shapes and text
repetition
the same element used over and over again, eg a business logo repeated on every page of a work leaflet
flow/linear pathways
help lead the viewers eye around the composition from one are to another
Perspective
create foregrounds and backgrounds through scale, also create a pathway
echo or framing
takes place when similar shapes are surrounding other shapes similarly
