143 (3) Physiology Objectives Flashcards
(35 cards)
What does the term Sensory mean?
Detecting 🕵️♂️ internal/external stimuli
What does the term Motor mean?
Responding 🗣 with 💪🏽 muscle contractions or glandular secretions 🤫
What does the term Integrative mean?
Integrating or (ASL) interpreting the stimuli
State how Transduction limits Sensory Receptors to being able to detect only certain types of stimuli.
The specific receptor is converted (transduced) into an electrical signal that can be propagated into the CNS via afferent, sensory neurons
What does the term Perception mean?
The conscious awareness of stimuli.
What is an example of a stimulus that is sensed by the body but not perceived?
Blood pressure is sensed by body but not consciously perceived.
How do Somatic Motor Neurons differ functionally from Visceral Motor Neurons?
Somatic Motor Neurons send signals to ☠️skeletal muscle that respond to conscious, voluntary signals.
Visceral Motor Neurons send signals to smooth/cardiac muscles that respond to unconscious, involuntary signals.
How does the Somatic Nervous System and the Autonomic Nervous System differ in function?
SNS= Skeletal Muscle
ANS= Cardiac\ Smooth Muscles
How do the functions of the Parasympathetic Nervous System differ from the Sympathetic Nervous System?
Parasympathetic Nervous System Response:
- Dominates “rest & digest” activities (salivating, lactating, lacrimating, urinating, defecating, and digesting)
- Decreases in heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure. (Increases SLLUDD)
Sympathetic Nervous System response:
- Dominates “E” situations (emergency, excitement, exercise, embarrassment)
- Increases heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure thru Fight/ Flight response (Reduces SLLUDD)
What is the function of the glial cells Astrocytes?
Form the blood-brain barrier
What is the function of the glail cell Microglia?
Phagocytes
What is the function of the glial cell Ependymal?
Produce and circulate cerebrospinal fluid
What is the function if the glial cells Oligodendrocytes?
Myelination
What is the function of the glial cell Schwann?
Protect and myelinate axons
What is the function if the glial cell Satellite?
Protect and mediate permeability of cell body
What is the general function of Afferent Neurons?
AKA Sensory Neurons
- detect stimuli
What is the general function of Interneurons?
To integrate or interpret the stimuli
What is the general function if Efferent Neurons?
AKA Motor Neurons
- responding with muscle contractions or glandular secretions
What is the general function of Multipolar Neurons?
Most common type of Neuron in body (interneurons and skeletal muscle motor neurons are multipolar)
What is the general function of Unipolar Neurons?
All Sensory neurons are Unipolar.
They allow action potential to travel from dendrite to axon without having to slow down.
What is the general function of Bipolar Neurons?
Associated only with:
- vision
- hearing
- smell
What are the major functions of myelination on nerve fibers?
Protection
What’s the difference between continuous conduction and saltatory conduction?
Continuous: unmyelinated axons, propagate action potentials along entire length if axon
Saltatory: myelinated axons, propagate action potentials only in nodes of Ranvier (signal “skips” from node to node and reaches axon terminals faster)
What is the function if the Olfactory cranial nerve?
Sensory: Smell
