What is the DSM

A

It is the ‘diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders’. It is created in the USA and is mostly just used in the USA. It was introduced in 1952 and has been revised 5 times since then and the DSM 5 was released in 2013 the DSM 4 provided never seen before reliability and detail in its diagnosis. It contains 22 major diagnostic categories grouping over 200 psychology disorders

What is the ICD?

A

This is the international classification of diseases. It was developed by the WHO and is used around the world, it classifies diseases physical and mental. The new ICD 11 was introduced in 2022. It contains 11 diagnostic categories instead of 22 in the DSM.

How does the DSM tackle culture bound syndromes and the cultural factors in the diagnosis of mental health disorders?

A

DSM- includes a section dealing with culture related diagnosis across most mental health disorders. It includes a cultural framework for assessing info about cultural features of an individuals mental health. The DSM 5 also includes a cultural formulation interview which helps to obtain info on the impact of allure on key aspects of individuals.

How does the ICD tackle culture bound syndromes and the cultural factors in the diagnosis of mental health disorders?

A

Culture specific disorders do not require a specific section and this has been expressed as a need less and less in recent years. This is misleading to practitioners and says that they should not be concerned about screening for potential culture specific disorders.
