Correlation Flashcards
What is correlation?
Finds the best fit line by minimising the distances between the data and the line
Describes single relationship, its strength and direction
X and Y are interchangeable
What does the R value tell you?
1) Which direction your correlation is
2) How strong your correlation is
What does the r-squared value tell you?
How much the variance is explained by your correlation
If the R2 value is to 1, what does this tell you?
There is a lot of variance
What does 1-r2 represent?
The amount of variance unexplained
Does correlation allow prediction?
No
What can cause problems in regression and correlation?
Non-Linear Relationships
Who first suggested the mathematical approach for determining the magnitude of a
linear relationship between two variables, such as X and Y?
Karl Pearson
