Unit 2 Test Flashcards
What is plate tectonics?
The geological theory that states that pieces are of earths Lithosphere ate in constant ,slow motion, driven by convection currents in the mantle.
What are plate boundaries?
The interface area between crustal plates where earthquakes and volcanoes are most common.
What is a fault?
A break in the lithosphere along which movement has occured.
What is a divergent plate boundary?
2 tectonic plates that move away from each other.
What type of plate boundary is mid-ocean ridge?
Diveregent
What are convergent plate boundaries?
2 tectonic plates that move towards each other.
What type of boundary is a subduction zone.
Converegent
What are transform plate boundarys?
2 tectonic plates that slide past one another in opposite directions.
What kind of boundary is the San Andres Fault?
Transform
What is a subduction zone?
The ocean floor sinks beneath a deep ocean trench and back into the mantle.
What do subduction zones allow?
Allows the ocean floor/crust to sink into the mantle and melt into molten rock.
What are transform plate boundarys?
Earthquakes within the crust.
What is mid-ocean ridge?
Underwater mountain range where magma rises to the surface and creates the seafloor(seafloor spreading).
What is seafloor spreading?
The theory that explains how new ocean crust is formed at the ocean ridges.
Are rocks closer to the ridge younger are older than ones farther away from the ridge?
Closer.
What is magnetic reversal?
Occurs when the flow in the outer core changes and earths magnetic field changed direction.
What is proves at the Mid-Atlantic ridge about magnetic reversal.
At the mid-Atlantic ridge, rocks prove that the earths magnetic fields reversed. Overtime the polarity of oceanic rock reverses.
What is volcanism?
Any activity that includes the movement of magma towards or onto the surface if the earth.
