Form when a branch grows out of the main trunk

Pros - more visually appealing

Cons - weakens the grain, harder to work, fall out of the plank, resin seeps from the knots

Open grain - where the grain vessels are very large and show at the surface, need grain filler and sanding before finishing.

Closed grain - small vessels of similar size so are fine grained, need to be sanded before finishing.

Interlocking grain - difficult to work because it tears which ever way it is worked
