What is Cushings syndrome ?

A

Cushing’s syndrome is a condition caused by having too much of a hormone called cortisol in your body. It can be serious if it’s not treated.
Seen in people with-
steroid tablets, synthetic version of cortisol, for a long time
Very rarely, body produces too much cortisol
diagnosed between the ages of 30 to 40
incidence of Cushing’s is 1 in 200,000
Common in woman

A

to regulate blood pressure
to regulate the immune system
to balance the effect of insulin to keep blood sugar normal
the body to respond to stress

What is the difference between cushings disease and cushing syndrome ?

A

If the source of the problem is the pituitary gland, then the correct name is Cushing’s disease.

Whereas, if it originates anywhere else, then the correct name is Cushing’s syndrome.

What are symptoms of cushing syndrome ?

A

Symptoms can start suddenly or gradually:
skin that bruises easily
large purple stretch marks
weakness in your upper arms and thighs
a reduced sex drive (low libido) and fertility problems
depression and mood swings

One of the main signs is weight gain and more body fat, such as:
increased fat on your chest and tummy, but slim arms and legs
a build-up of fat on the back of your neck and shoulders, known as a “buffalo hump”
a red, puffy, rounded face
Cushing’s syndrome can also cause high blood pressure, which can be serious if not treated.

What are tests for diagnosing cushing syndrome ?

A

May suspect Cushing’s syndrome if taking steroid medicine.
If suspected, measure the amount of cortisol in:
urine
blood
saliva

If these tests show a high level of cortisol, referred to a specialist in hormone conditions (endocrinologist) to confirm or rule out Cushing’s syndrome.

Imaging tests.CT or MRI scans of the pituitary and adrenal glands to r/o tumors.
