Quote

A

Furthermore, Auden uses repetition to put emphasis on the significance of this event through the quote “there was a voice in his left ear, there was a voice in his right, there was a voice at the base of his skull saying, “she must die tonight””.

Q

Quote analysis

A

Through this quote, readers are made aware of Victors sense of insanity because it becomes clear that his emotions and the voices in his head are getting the better of him and that he is unable to think straight. Victor is acting on his emotions not his morals and beliefs, as if he was acting on his morals and beliefs, he would not kill Anna because he is a deeply religious man and murder is regarded as a sin to religious individuals.

A

Therefore, sentence structure is effectively used to revel the central concern of sanity when Victor kills Anna, because the emphasise put on the voices in his head makes readers become aware of how he feels like he has to act on his emotions and how he is not in the right mental state.
