Forces and Elasticity Flashcards
What happens when you apply a force to a spring
You may cause it to Bend, Stretch or Compress
How does an object change shape?
When more than one force acts on an object
other wise the object would simply move in the direction of the applied force instead of changing shape
When is work done
in a spring
When the spring is stretched or compressed energy is transferred to the elastic potential energy store of the object
Define what elastic deformation means
When an object can go back to its original shape and length after the force has been removed
What are elastic objects
Objects that can be elastically deformed
What is inelastic deformation
When an object can’t go back go it’s original shape and length after the force has been removed
Fact
The extension of a stretched spring is directly proportional to the load or force applied
Equation for Force
Force(N)=Spring constant(N/m) x Extension(M)
F=ke
when does extension stop becoming directly proportional to force
When the force exceeds the limit of proportionality
What is tension
The force experienced by a cable, rope or string when pulled hung rotated or supported
What is upthrust
The upword buoyancy force acting on an object when it is in a fluid
What is friction
The force that arises when two surfaces are in contact with each other
