Differential Achievement and Gender External (Boys) Flashcards
Boys and literacy
The gender gap is mainly the result of boys’ poorer literacy and language skills. Mothers who do most of the reading, see reading as a feminine activity, so boys are less likely to read.
Difference in boys and girls activities and it’s affects on educational advantage
Boys’ leisure activities, like football, do little to help their development and communication skills.
Girls have a ‘bedroom culture’ centred on studying and talking with friends.
Globalisation and the decline of traditional male jobs
Since the 1980s there has been a decline in heavy industries due to globalisation as these industries relocate to developing countries to take advantage of cheap labour. These sectors were traditionally mainly men run.
Mitsos and Browne and identity crisis
Mitsos and Browne say that there is an identity crisis for men due to the decline in male employment opportunities.
Boys believe that they have little prospect of getting a proper job, undermining their motivation and self esteem so they give up trying to gain qualifications.
Policies to help boys achievement- AO3
Their are policies in place to raise boys achievement such as the Dad’s and Sons Campaign: encourages fathers to be more involved with their sons education.
Globalisation & the decline of traditional men’s jobs- AO3
The declines in manual working class jobs that require little to no qualifications, it is unlikely that it will have an impact on boys’ education.
