3.1.7 Oxidation, reduction and redox equations Flashcards
What does OILRIG stand for ?
Oxidation is loss of electrons
Reduction is gain of electrons
What is an oxidising agent ?
Something that takes electrons from something else, so is reduced itself as it gains electrons
What is a reducing agent ?
Something that gives electrons to another compound, so is oxidised itself as it looses electrons
A + B —–> A+ + B- Identify the oxidising agent
B, As it takes an electron from A meaning it is reduced itself
A + B —–> A+ + B- Identify the reducing agent
A, As it gives an electron to B meaning it is oxidised itself
What does an oxidation state show ?
How many electrons an atom has gained or lost
In a compound with Flourine, Flourine;s oxidation state is always ___ ?
-1 as it is the most electronegative atom
The oxidation state of oxygen is always ___ ?
-2
Hydrogen always has an oxidation state of ___ ?
+1
In a pure element its oxidation state is always ___ ?
0
What is the oxidation state of oxygen in a peroxide ?
-1
What is the oxidation state of hydrogen in a metal hydride ?
-1
