A

Done for symptom relief & eliminate mammographic masses. Done on cystic lesions that have thick walls. Fluid eval only if suspicious.

FNA

A

After local anesthetic used a fine needle (18-25 gauge) used to aspirate cell, Multiple passes may be needed. CELL sample used to provide bedside sampling. Done on irregular lymph nodes. Results in 1-2 hrs. Can have false (-) due to small sample size.

US core biopsy

A

Done for solid lesions/lesions near chest wall. Uses 14-16 gauge to take a TISSUE sample. Uses US to guide. Passes 3-5 times. Risk of bleeding infection is higher. Results in 24 hrs

Done on solid lesions with other suspicious features. 7-14 gauge automated sampling system. Needle enters lesion once, sampling notch rotates. Most common type of image guided bio.

Wire loc

A

Placement of needle wire for pre op guidance that will locate: breast cancer/high risk lesion. Wire is used to guide surgeon to mass. During surgery surgeon will take wire out with mass. Specimen taken to xray. Cc/ml/mlo taken.

A

Done on a nonpalpable lesion. Used to determine exact location. Uses angled images to traingualte depth of lesion & calculate position in 3D. Tube angled 15 deg. To left & right.
