Controlling blood glucose Flashcards
How are changes in blood glucose controlled and monitored?
The pancreas uses the hormones insulin and glucagon in a negative feedback cycle
What happens when you consume food with carbohydrates?
putssomething into the ____ from the ____
It puts glucose into the blood from the guts.
How does you remove excess glucose?
- Vigorous exercise
- Stored as glycagen in the liver and the muscles
What happens when blood glucose levels are too high?
Secreted
Insulin is secreted by the pancreas
Insulin binds to receptors on the liver and muscles, causing excess glucose to be converted into glycogen and stored
How is blood glucose concentration controlled using a negative feedback loop
- When the blood glucose concentration rises or falls below the optimum, a hormone is secreted by the pancreas.
- The action of either hormone (insulin or glucagon) helps bring back the concentration to the correct level
What is Type 1 diabetes
- When the pancreas produces little to no insulin
- This means that a persons blood glucose levels can rise to a level that can kill them
What is type 2 diabtes
- Where a person is reisistant to their own insulin
- This causes a persons blood sugar level to rise to a dangerousl level
What do people with type 1 diabetes need?
And why
Regular insulin injections throughout the day
This is done so glucose is removed quickly once the food has been digested stopping the level from getting too high.
What are the risk factors of type 2 diabetes
Being overweight
Being old
Physically unactive people
If family members have it
