What is development?
A sequence for the attainment of skills and abilities
What are the principles of growth?
1) Growth rates aren’t constant.
2) Different parts grow at different rates.
3) Rates vary between children.
4) Boys usually faster than girls.
What are the principles of development?
1) Head to toe.
2) Inside to outside.
3) Same sequence, different rates.
4) Holistic.
What are the life stages?
Infancy 0-2
Early Childhood 3-8
Adolescence 9-18
Early Adulthood 19-45
Middle Adulthood 46-65
Late Adulthood 65+
What are Gross motor skills?
Develops first
Co-ordinates larger muscles to perform actions
What are Fine motor skills?
Becomes more precise over time
Co-ordinates smaller muscles to perform actions
Mainly hand-eye co-ordination
What is the Pincer Grasp?
Use of forefinger and thumb together to ‘pinch’
Around 9-10 months
What is the Palmer Grasp?
Involuntary reflex in infants. When something places in their palm they grasp.
Disappears around 16 weeks
What is the Tripod Grasp?
When the thumb, index finger and middle finger work together to pick up small objects
4-7 years
What is Puberty?
A period of rapid growth and change when sexual maturity is reached and secondary sexual characteristics.
What are Primary Sexual Characteristics?
The reproductive organs that are present at birth (e.g uterus)
What are Secondary Sexual Characteristics?
Outward signs of development from a child to adult (e.g breasts)
What hormonal changes occur during pregnancy?
Oestrogen- developing placenta
Oxytocin- reduces pain during labour
Prolactin- produce milk
Relaxin- loosens muscles
What are the physical effect s of Peri-menopause?
Examples:
-loss of breast fullness
-thinning hair
-vaginal dryness
-hot flushes
