Ex situ breeding, establishing or maintaining ex situ populations to guard against extinction or serve as source for reintroduction (Conservation Breeding)
How is Education / Outreach a positive contribution of zoos?
If people form an emotional attachment to an individual animal of a species, they are more likely to be inspired to take the actions necessary to save them
How is fundraising a positive attribute of zoos?
Money is funded for research and rehabilitation of the species.
What are the 3 main attributes of the Polar Bear Protection Act?
- Polar bears may only be placed in captivity for educational, scientific or such other purpose deemed to be in the public interest;
- Allows for setting regulations regarding permit eligibility and facility and care standards that must be met to receive a polar bear from Manitoba; and
- Prohibits the export of polar bears to an agency or jurisdiction that does not meet Manitoba standards;
What are the 3 factors of eligibility for the Polar Bear Protection Act?
- It is an orphaned cub, under two years of age
- It cannot safely be released into the wild; and
- It is in good health
What are the 3 amendments made to the polar bear eligibility?
- The director is satisfied that it cannot safely be released into the wild;
- The director determines that it is capable of adapting to life in captivity, having regard to its age, size and temperament; and
- It is examined by a licensed veterinarian who determines that it may be provided to the permit holder without jeopardizing its health.
What is the most recent policy regarding orphaned cubs?
Only polar bear cubs orphaned as a result of human action will continue to be relocated to zoos which can demonstrate they have a high quality facility that can meet current Canadian standards for housing of polar bears.
