Energy Changes Flashcards
Describe an exothermic reaction
When energy is lost as heat into the surrounding/dissipated into the surroundings
An example of an Exothermic Reaction would be:
- Combustion - Fuels
- Oxidation
- Neutralizing
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction that requires energy to begin, heat is applied to supply this energy. Eg. Bunsen Burner
What is activation energy?
The minimum energy required for the reactant particles to begin colliding and reacting
An endothermic reaction example would be:
- Melting
What are bond energies?
The amount of energy to break a mole of a covalent bond
How many bonds is 1mol
6.02x10^23
Breaking bonds is a ____________ Reaction
Endothermic because it requires energy
Forming Bonds is a ____________ Reaction
Exothermic reaction because it releases energy
How do we find if a overall reaction is endothermic or exothermic?
Find the difference in energy of the reactants and the products
If the result of a breaking bonds calculation is negative, is the reaction endothermic or exothermic?
Exothermic, Energy is lost into the atmosphere when making the products
View the Notes on Bond energies to see examples
If the energy of the reactants is less than that of the products, the reaction is ____________
endothermic
If the energy of the reactants is greater than that of the products, the reaction is ____________
Exothermic, going dooooooown, dissipating heat
What is a fuel cell?
An electrical cell supplied with fuel and oxygen, that uses energy from the reaction to produce electricity.
