16
Q

what is a hemorrhagic stoke?

A

a rupture of blood vessels in the brain and linked to hypertension

17
Q

what are ways to prevent cardiovascular disease?

A

maintain a healthy diet, fat and cholesterol should be less then 30 percent of total calories, lower fat intake, increase consumption of plants, limit sodium, moderate alcohol consumption.

18
Q

what is cancer?

A

Cancer is a group of diseases marked by uncontrolled multiplication of abnormal cells.

19
Q

what is a tumor?

A

a mass of tissue that serves no physiological purpose

20
Q

what is a benign tumor?

A

mass of normal cells enclosed in a membrane that prevents their penetration of other tissues that is non cancerous.

21
Q

what is a malignant tumor?

A

a cancerous tumor that can invade surrounding tissues, can spread via blood and lymphatic circulation.

22
Q

what is a carcinogen?

A

a substance known to trigger DNA mutations that can lead to cancer

23
Q

what is an oncogene?

A

mutated gene that encourages the uncontrolled cell division that results in cancer

24
Q

what is metastasis?

A

the process by which a malignant tumor spreads to other sites

25
Q

what are some causes of cancer?

A

genetic and biological factors, lifestyle factors, environmental exposures, exposure to infectious agents, dietary factors, alcohol.

26
Q

what is cancer diagnosed?

A

screening tests such as mammograms and a colonoscopy can detect cancers at specific sites, biopsy can test for abnormal growth, lab tests such as blood work and bodily fluids, imaging technologies such as ultrasound, MRI, CT, and a PET scan.

27
Q

how is cancer treated?

A

surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation

28
Q

what are gender specific cancers for women?

A

breast, ovarian, and cervical and uterine

29
Q

what are gender specific cancers for men?

A

prostate and testicular

30
Q

what are non gender specific cancers?

A

skin, lungs, colorectal, and oral

31
Q

what is skin cancer?

A

forms of basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and melanomas. Can occur with excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays, sunburns.

32
Q

what is lung cancer?

A

most common cause of cancer death in US and history of smoking.

33
Q

what is colon and rectal cancer?

A

Excessive alcohol use, obesity, oral contraceptives and hormone replacement.

34
Q

What is ovarian cancer?

A

similar to breast cancer, age, no pregnancy, family history, obesity, genetic mutations, high number of ovulations during lifespan.

35
Q

what is breast cancer?

A

genetic history, early onset menstruation, late onset menopause, having a child after 30, having no children, hormone replacement, obesity, diet, and alcohol use.

36
Q

what is prostate cancer?

A

age, lifestyle, genetic factors, history of STDS, type 2 diabetes.

37
Q

what is cervical cancer?

A

directly associated with infections by the human papillomavirus or HPV

38
Q

what is uterine and endometrial cancer?

A

prolonged exposure to estrogen, early menstruation, late menopause, no pregnancies, obesity.
