Q

What is a lifecycle assessment

A

LCA measures the environmental impact of a product during its lifespan.
Environmental impacts are assessed from raw material extraction, to processing the product (cradle), manufacture, distribution, use and recycling or final disposal of the product (grave). This is known as cradle to grave

Q

How can environmental impact be reduced through design

A

-Smart Car
-Double ignition ensures as much fuel is combusted as possible- lower emissions
-Thermoplastic body panel- lightweight, doesn’t corrode, easily changed
-Six gear drive- more fuel efficient

Q

How RETHINK has been incorporated into design

A

When designing a product, consideration to environmental impacts should be taken, to make the product more sustainable and reduce waste
Eg, ford has rethought its design to reduce weight by 700lbs, making it more fuel efficient and sustainable
